It wasn't a fair fight

frantically scurrying back and forth,
darting, dodging,
with two cats right on its tail...
it’s long, creepy, mouse tail… but still…
I stood by with a bucket, ready to cover it,
to protect it from harm…

and to compassionately remove it from
this hostile environment
and place it gently in some brush
far down the country road,
far enough away
that it won’t find its way back

But try as I might,
I couldn’t convey my intentions
to my panic-stricken visitor…
For each time I would come near,
hoping to become its savior,
It darted away.

I wonder how many times
we, as people,
in our vain attempts to be self-sufficient
run away from the very One
who is trying to remove us
from our unsafe environment,

and place us gently in
a place of protection.
Instead we turn and dart away
from the very thing
that we’ve been looking for -
Someone to save us

The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.   Psalm 9:9
